How Obama Can Help Rescue the Postal Service Right Now
The U.S. Postal Service is going out of
business, partly because of mismanagement. As a functioning business, its
board of directors would have been replaced years ago.The Postal Service
has been reeling from threats to its financial stability. The Board of
Governors sets budgets, pricing and policy for the Postal Service. Despite
six years of a Democratic president, Republicans have held for years the
majority of the board’s occupied slots. As a result, the reaction to
diminished physical mail traffic and an unworkable retirement funding
mandate from Congress (the Postal Service must pre-fund its retirement
benefits 75 years out, a demand placed on no other federal agency or
private business) has been mostly about job and service cuts. Comments

Carper calls story on strong-arming his colleagues "hogwash"
“We did everything we could have thought of,

How a Major Postal Overhaul Nearly Made Its Way Into the CRomnibus
Lawmakers attempted a last-minute maneuver to include a major overhaul of the
U.S. Postal Service in the spending bill that averted a government shutdown, but
several Senate Democrats objected and stymied the effort. Sen. Tom Carper,
D-Del. tried to strong-arm members of his own party into adopting the plan, When
the lawmakers at last week’s meeting told Carper it was too late to move forward
with such a sweeping bill and said they should instead focus on preventing the
facility closures Carper rejected the proposal. In fact, Carper said those who
opposed him would bear the blame for the consolidations. Carper attempted to
strengthen his position by threatening to allow the Postal Service to follow
through on its plan to shutter 82 processing plants next year, which will
lead to loss of at least 7,000 jobs and the relocation of even more. NAPS: Carper and Coburn’s last ditch effort to push postal

Senate
confirmed nominations of Hammond, Langley to PRC by voice votes
On December 9, 2014 the Senate confirmed
nominations of Tony Hammond and Nanci E. Langley as Postal Regulatory
Commissioners by voice votes. The PRC now has its required 5 members. The PRC
should be in good shape. Hammond is a die-hard Republican
and Nanci Langley was "instrumental in the development and enactment of the
Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA)." The PRC chairman
and vice-chairman are both Republicans. So there are 3 Republicans and 2
Democrats leading the PRC. Also, Senate failed to confirm the nomination of
current USPS Board Of Governors Chairman Mickey Barnett by Monday deadline. As
it stands now there are not enough members for a quorum in order to conduct
postal business.

OIG recommendation to outsource mail processing
operations would harm USPS and customers -
Dr. Panzar finds that the Postal Service’s mail
processing plays a vital role in ensuring the efficiency of the postal sector,
even in the absence of economies of scale in mail processing. In other words,
Dr. Panzar maintains that if the Postal Service abandons all mail processing and
transportation of letters and flats, overall efficiency will decrease.

Open Letter to Postmaster General Select
Megan J. Brennan

Williams, Jr.- You must have
the ability to see around corners. What will
happen when mail slows down and facilities

Major civil rights coalition opposes USPS consolidation plans
The Leadership Conference
on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of
more than 200 national organizations
committed to the protection and advancement
of civil and human right. Because of the
threat to many communities of the USPS
consolidating offices and limiting service,
potentially pushing individuals to private

any omnibus appropriations legislation or
continuing resolution to ensure a moratorium
on service standard changes and processing
plant closings during Fiscal Year 2015.

Goldway replaced as Postal Regulatory Commission Chairman
The U.S. Postal
Regulatory Commission (PRC) has named a new
acting chairman.Robert Taub (R) was named the new Chairman
and Mark Acton (R) the new Vice
chairman. There are still 2 vacancies
at the PRC. If the Senate fails to
confirm vacancies on USPS Board of Governors
and PRC by the end of the year both groups
will be like the US Supreme Court, House and
Senate -- under GOP control. One reader is
doubtful about the Senate confirming
nominees: "It's like football, we're down to
the 2 minute warning, no timeouts left, we
need a field goal to win, the best punter is
injured and the backup punter is none
other than ....Darrell Issa."
